Provenance and history
In Game 3 of the 1932 World Series at Wrigley Field, amid heckling from the Chicago Cubs dugout, Ruth hit a home run that became known as the 'called shot'; whether he pointed to predict it remains disputed. Heritage reports that the jersey was acquired around 1990 by a hobby pioneer from an elderly woman in Florida whose father, a golfing friend of Ruth's near the Yankees' St. Petersburg spring-training ground, had received it from Ruth in retirement. Heritage matched it to photographs taken before and after the game. It sold at Heritage in Dallas in August 2024 for $24.12 million, nearly double the previous record for sports memorabilia.
