Record

Topps's 1952 set was its first large baseball issue, and card #311 opened its last series. In 1986 the dealer Alan 'Mr. Mint' Rosen bought some 5,500 1952 Topps cards, including dozens of Mantles, from a find in Quincy, Massachusetts. At a card show in 1991 he sold this Mantle, ungraded, for $50,000 to the collector Anthony Giordano, who kept it at home in south-eastern Pennsylvania for three decades. Offered at auction for the first time by Heritage, it sold on 28 August 2022 for $12.6 million, then a record for any sports collectible.
