Record

Joanne Woodward gave her husband Paul Newman this Daytona, engraved 'DRIVE CAREFULLY ME', around the time he took up motor racing; accounts place the gift in 1968–69 or 1972. Newman wore it daily for years, and photographs of him wearing it gave the 'exotic' dial its nickname. In 1984, after receiving another Daytona, he gave it to James Cox, the boyfriend of his daughter Nell. Phillips sold it at its 'Winning Icons' auction in New York on 26 October 2017 for $17,752,500 after a twelve-minute contest that opened with a $10 million phone bid, then the record for a wristwatch.
