Record
Henry Graves Jr. commissioned the watch in 1925 for 60,000 Swiss francs; it took three years to design and five to make, and was delivered on 19 January 1933. The story of a rivalry with the car maker James Ward Packard may be a later invention. After Graves died in 1953 it passed to his daughter Gwendolen and in 1960 to her son, Reginald Fullerton, who sold it in 1969 to the industrialist Seth Atwood for $200,000 for his Time Museum in Rockford, Illinois. Sotheby's sold it in New York on 2 December 1999 for $11,002,500 to a buyer later revealed as Sheikh Saud bin Muhammed Al Thani of Qatar. After his death it sold again at Sotheby's Geneva on 11 November 2014 for CHF 23,237,000, then a record for any watch.
