Provenance and history

In the quarter-final at the Estadio Azteca in Mexico City on 22 June 1986, Maradona scored twice against England: first with his hand, after England midfielder Steve Hodge sliced the ball towards him, then with a solo goal often called the goal of the century. Hodge swapped shirts with Maradona after the match and kept this one, lending it for some twenty years to the National Football Museum in Manchester. Sotheby's sold it in an online auction that closed on 4 May 2022 for £7,142,500, then a record for sports memorabilia.
