Provenance and history
Hendrix played this Stratocaster at Woodstock in August 1969. After his death it passed to his drummer Mitch Mitchell, who kept it for some twenty years before selling it at Sotheby's in London in 1990, where the Italian broadcaster Gabriele Ansaloni bought it for £198,000, then a record for a guitar. Paul Allen, co-founder of Microsoft, later bought it from Ansaloni for about $770,000 for the museum he founded in Seattle, now the Museum of Pop Culture.
