Provenance and history
Commander Neil Armstrong wore this suit for the first human steps on the Moon on 20 July 1969. NASA transferred it to the National Air and Space Museum in 1971. Its rubber and plastics degrade, so it was taken off display for more than a decade. In 2015 the museum's 'Reboot the Suit' Kickstarter raised the $500,000 goal within days for its conservation, digitisation and a climate-controlled case, and the suit went back on display on 16 July 2019, fifty years after launch. It is now shown in the museum's Destination Moon gallery.
