Maker unknown
The only known cover bearing both denominations of the 1847 Mauritius Post Office stamps; sold from Hiroyuki Kanai’s collection in 1993.
The Bordeaux Cover preserves both denominations of Mauritius’s first stamp issue on the same piece of mail. Its combination of the one-penny and two-pence Post Office stamps distinguishes this cover from other surviving examples of either stamp. Hiroyuki Kanai bought it through David Feldman in 1988 for US$3.8 million. It returned to auction with Kanai’s Mauritius collection on 3 November 1993, when it realised CHF 6,123,750. These are documented historical transactions, not estimates of its present value. The current owner has not been identified in the sources used here.
